What an amazing 10 days we just had. I really hope that everyone had a great time at this year’s Creative Music Workshop. The Faculty was very impressed with everyone’s efforts and the overall skill level of all of our participants this year. You should be very proud of yourself and of the final performance. I had people coming up to me afterwards saying that this year the concert was the best in recent memory!

It doesn’t have to be over yet mind you. If you want to see more workshops and clinics, or a weekly ensemble through out the year, let me know. Jerry and I are going to start talking about what’s next for the CMW and your feedback would help us out greatly.

Also, I’ve got some pictures and video that I’m going to be posting soon, but if you have any video, pictures, testimonials, drawings, notes, essays, experiences, etc, that you would like to share on this blog send them to me and I’ll share them with the world.

It was very nice meeting all of you, and I hope that you stay in touch with our CMW community.

Today is really exciting. At noon we have a masterclass with bass player, Anthony Cox. Make sure that you come to 1313 Hollis street tonight to see Anthony Play with Jerry, J. Anthony Granelli and Simon Fisk (cello). It’s going to be an awesome night of low end madness.

Paul Vienneau is not only an amazing local bass player, he is also a amazing local photographer. Tasked by Granelli to take some snap shots of the workshop from a student perspective he has been busy playing and shooting for the last few days. CMW Day 6

Back again, the rain killed my computer so it’s been a while since my last post, but a new hard-drive and here we are.

So far the CMW has been an amazing time. Everyone is working really hard and stepping up to the challenges that the Faculty is laying down. We broke into ensembles yesterday and have started writing music for the final concert. I was around for the rehearsals, and though it’s only been one day I think I can say that this years concert is going destroy. I just hope that volunteers at the tent site are trained in the proper procedure for cleaning, and redistributing melted minds.

We’re really excited for our Workshop tomorrow with bass player, Anthony Cox. Anthony is doing a workshop today at 1313 hollis street, 1pm, $20. Make sure you check it out!!!

CMW Day #1

We had an amazing first day yesterday. The CMW for me is like a birthday, you know it’s coming and then **bam** you wake up on morning and realize today is the day. Just like a birthday it is filled with excitement, friends and the awkwardness of being put on the spot.

As part of the first day ritual everyone had to preform solo pieces, not an easy task in a room full of people who you might not have met yet. No one folded and everyone brought something unique to the table. I think it’s going to be a very good 10 days.

I hope to see everyone at the Bad Plus tonight,

Sacred Heart

Jerry and I were at Sacred Heart this morning checking out the scene. The pre-CMW verdict is that it’s going to be awesome! We’ve got some great rooms, a great location central to all the festival events, and an elevator for gear. It should be less like a sauna too, which will be nice too.

The Other Side

Well, we’ve past the deadline and come out the other side. No apocalypse, no soylent green, no banishment to the fringes, in fact I think we had the nicest weekend of the summer. It made me feel so good that I’ve decided to look at some late applications. If you missed the deadline for some reason and want to attend, apply today because I cannot guarantee spots from here on out.

AHHHHHH!!!!! It’s the last day of official registration. From here on out registering will be like a post apocalyptic, every man for himself, free-for-all for the last spots… and yes I realize that the Home Alone reference and clashes with the doomsday imagery, but it’s crunch time, and it’s to down to the wire to write good and stuff. I think that the program can speak for itself anyway.

Here is a cool interview with J. Anthony Granelli. A really cool discussion about playing multiple genres, improvising, the CMW, and learning. Minute 4 to the end is amazing. It really exemplifies what this workshop is all about, and I wish I had found it sooner.

Well, we’ve reached that point once again. Tomorrow is the deadline for applying to the Creative Music Workshop. Trying to register from July 1st onward will be a gamble. Maybe you’re an adrenalin junkie and signing up for things last minute is how you get your fix, thats cool, but I think the workshop would provide more excitement.
