Hello and welcome to the Cyber-Home of the Creative Music Workshop! At the Creative Music Workshop blog site you can learn about the program, look at some pictures of past workshops, get news about upcoming CMW events and contact us about registering for upcoming workshops.
The Creative Music Workshop is an experience that will stay with you long after the program ends. I can say this with confidence not because I am the Creative Music Workshop Coordinator, but because I am an alumni of the Creative Music Workshop. When I took the program I felt like I was on a set path. I had been studying music seriously for a few years and I had set notions of how I should play and how I should improvise. The Creative Music Workshop opened my ears and my mind to a way of thinking about music that I had never thought of before. It shattered my preconceived notions of what music could be, and showed me that music could be anything I wanted it to be. I realized that with dedicated practice I could create anything that I heard and thats okay. Needless to say it was a liberating experience.
Durning the workshop I got to see shows at the Halifax Jazz Festival, for FREE, with my All Events Pass that came with my registration. I would go to the classes, then head to the festival. I saw so many inspiring artists, some of them where already hero’s of mine, but I discovered so many new artists that week too. It seemed like the Faculty played every night too, so the lessons never stopped. I would go to 3 shows every night, and stay out till the end of the light night series. I think I averaged 4 hours of sleep a night and at the end of the week I slept for 13 hours.
After I left the workshop I immediately started applying what I had learned. I formed an incredibly rewarding band that would have never existed if not for the Creative Music Workshop. Moreover I realized that a lot of the things we had talked about like listening, communicating, and being adaptive applied to any musical situation. I feel that what I can offer as a musician is unique because of what the Creative Music Workshop taught me.
The Creative Music Workshop is something that is well worth checking out if you are serious about perusing the study of music. It’s been a major factor in my musical development, and has set me on a path that would not have existed I not gone, and I wouldn’t change that for anything.
